HELI-FISHING
|
fly fishing at its best
|

Heli-fishing is an option that is becoming more and more popular with my clients, particularly those clients with a sense of adventure and a limited amount of time available for fly fishing. Helicopter transport enables anglers to experience the challenge of rainbow trout and brown trout fishing with dry fly or nymph in pristine wilderness streams and rivers. New Zealand scenery, when viewed from aloft is breathtaking and provides an exciting and memorable way to start and finish your angling day. This form of "high tech" transport comes at a cost that you may initially consider out of your reach, however when this cost is shared between each client or in some cases each party, I believe the cost to be reasonable.
TROUT FISHING SERVICES uses two helicopter operators that are registered for air transport and fully concessioned to fly my clients into trout fisheries that are subjected to comparatively little angling pressure.

This 500E can make incredible fishing locations easily available. The Helicopter Line Limited operates Aerospatiale AS 355F1 twin engine Squirrels, capable of taking six passengers into some great fly fishing locations within 20 minutes of Queenstown.
Aspiring Helicopters Limited operates a Hughes 500E that is based near Wanaka. This machine is licensed to take four passengers (plus the pilot!) and opens a wide range of fly fishing opportunities and locations, on both sides of the Southern Alps. The brown trout that frequent the upper reaches of various South Westland rivers are well worth consideration.
Pilot Grant Bisset checks out the 500E prior to a day's helifishing in South Westland. This base camp is only accessible by helicopter.Heli-fishing is available from 1 November to 31 May each year with dry fly fishing peaking in February.

Fishing for rainbows in a river where breakoffs happen all too often. I wonder why?
A fine meal after a day on the water. From the left, Grant Bissett (chopper pilot), client Chuck Habeger, camp cook Judy McGraw and client Dick Audi. The entree was smoked salmon and caviar, the main course steak and sausages. The cook received no complaints!
